hello, this is breakfast with louise minchin and dan walker. it's just after 8:30am. the very latest news for you. one man has been killed and eight people have been taken to hospital, after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians near a mosque in north london. in the last few minutes, the metropolitan police says it bears all the marks of a terrorist attack. the prime minister will chair an emergency meeting of the cobra committee. graham satchell, our reporter is there, so many people solve what happened. good morning. a crowd of people here, i will talk to a person here overnight. abdul. can you tell us what you saw? what is seen you tell us what you saw? what is seen was
8:34 am
you tell us what you saw? what is seen was horrible, a horrible attack on innocent people this morning. there was an old man weighing down on the floor, i think he had a heart attack. this was before the attack happened? there was a man on the floor, me and my friends were going to meet up in a coffee place to meet after prayer. we went to help him, give him cpr, we were all circling around him and within a minute, this horrible man who was driving at speed, donned on us and went over the people. he drove straight into you? drove straight into us, i managed to put my head up, i survived, thank god. but other people, my friends, got hurt. i was in hospital, i am praying they get better and my condolences to the old
8:35 am
man, to his family, and... tell us what happened next. the guy, we ran to him, to get him out from the van before he can drive back and reverse, he came out and he tried to run, he went in a circle and came back, came our way, run, he went in a circle and came back, came ourway, i run, he went in a circle and came back, came our way, i tackled run, he went in a circle and came back, came our way, itackled him run, he went in a circle and came back, came our way, i tackled him to the floor, managed to hold him on the floor, managed to hold him on the ground. me and other people as well. until police came. you tackled him onto the floor? i tackled him on the floor until police came. what was he saying? when he was running, he saidi was he saying? when he was running, he said i want to kill more people, i want to kill more muslims. when we got him on the ground i asked him why, why are you doing this, trying to kill innocent people, tell me why? and he said i want to kill more muslims, kill me. i asked
8:36 am
why? and he said i want to kill more muslims, kill me. iasked him why? and he said i want to kill more muslims, kill me. i asked him again, innocent people, i was trying to hold him on the ground and there we re hold him on the ground and there were other people running, they managed... the home secretary this morning amber rudd cullen this a terrorist attack but how would you describe it? yes, i would describe it as same thing as they did, it was deliberately, meant to attack innocent people and whoever attacks innocent people and whoever attacks innocent people and whoever attacks innocent people is a terrorist, whether you are a muslim or a non—muslim. if you are going to harm innocent people, there is only a terror person who will do that. abdul, you are a very brave man. well done. thank you very much. thank you. abdul, part of the group that tackled this man, i would say undoubtedly helped to save lives overnight last night. we know one man has died, eight people in
8:37 am
hospital, the driver of the van, also in hospital, in police custody, and he will be questioned as soon as he is released. rim, thank you so much. we will be back with you in a few moments, we've been hearing from the police in the last few minutes, we heard from the deputy police commissioner. and he had this to say. a man received first aid at the scene and sadly he has died. any causative link between that will form part of the investigation, it's too early to state if his death was the result of the attack. our thoughts are absolutely with all of those affected by the incident on seven sisters road and their family, friends and the wider community. no matter what the motivation for this attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. this is being treated
8:38 am
asa an open mind. this is being treated as a terrorist attack and the counterterrorism command is investigating. this was an attack on london and all londoners and we should all stand together against extremists whatever their cause. from 21 minutes past midnight this morning police received a number of calls to seven sisters road following a fan having collided with pedestrians. officers were in the immediate vicinity at the time, actually as the attack unfolded and they responded instantly. additional officers were on the scene within ten minutes. —— van. one man was pronounced dead at the scene, aid others in hospital, two were treated at the scene. all of the victims we re at the scene. all of the victims were from the muslim community. i would like to praise the police officers who immediately responded to gave life—saving treatment at the scene but also very much those members of the public who assisted before and after this incident. that
8:39 am
was the latest from the police, they say this man they arrested has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and we have heard this morning, extraordinary eyewitness accou nts morning, extraordinary eyewitness a ccou nts of morning, extraordinary eyewitness accounts of how people managed to corner this man and police saying thank you for their support. we have talked about restraint, commendable in the circumstances. we will be speaking to the muslim council of britain ina speaking to the muslim council of britain in a moment and i am sure they will be reassured of what we heard from police, extra resources deployed for those who have observing ramadan. we want to talk a little about security, will get us is our security specialist. police saying that no one else was in the van, what can you tell us about what you know? at the moment,
8:40 am
it is limited and whatever information is coming through will be fairly sketchy and coming from a variety of different sources. i have spoken to some locals here, we are getting conflicting reports. from what i can draw from my analysis of the situation, this was well intended, to cause as much harm as possible and therefore i think it's clear, obviously, a terrorist attack but by whom? ultimately the group or individual that this person has been inspired by to carry out this attack, is playing directly into the islamic state and extremist agenda who have taken credit for many of these attacks of late. tell us with your expertise what makes you think it was well—planned, particularly? it's particularly the time that the actual attack has taken place. we are ina actual attack has taken place. we are in a period of ramadan right now and inevitably, those that are following ramadan are fasting
8:41 am
obviously during daylight hours and it is after daylight hours they will be able to go to worship, they will be able to go to worship, they will be able to eat and break their fast, this was a perfect opportunity for that person with ill intent to have the largest congregation of locals in one vicinity and particularly outside this particular location. they were congregated in the street and therefore, with their vehicle, as we've seen in many different attacks in the past, its easy for them to take as many casualties and fatalities as they can. we know this particular man is in police custody at the moment, what will the counterterrorism police priorities be? the really important thing is that he's been taken alive, that is fa ntastically that he's been taken alive, that is fantastically useful for the authorities in their subsequent interviews of him. he is apparently being medically treated right now and that is a standard for and for many reasons that has to be done to
8:42 am
ensure that he is robust enough to be able to be interviewed as quickly as possible to try and determine if there are any others that could be connected to him, could be part of a larger cell group that was operating and get as much valuable intelligence as possible. it will be not just the standard processes we hear so much about of late in the wa ke hear so much about of late in the wake of terrorist events, looking at known associates, cellular and digital food known associates, cellular and digitalfood prints, no doubt going to his residence and those near him to his residence and those near him to try and determine what they can, but having the suspect actually alive is incredibly valuable. extra police deployed across london but how can you protect members of the public from this type of attack? this is the massive challenge right now and again, this is something which is going to require a lot of deep thinking. there are certain security measures that have been developed over time to protect against hostile vehicles, that
8:43 am
include ramps, lock gates, allsorts of various types of street furniture that can be employed, but they have to consider potentially the re—architecture and to consider potentially the re—architectu re and replanning to consider potentially the re—architecture and replanning of certain areas particularly where there could be a large pedestrian footfall but there are thousands if not millions of cars on the road every day in the uk and we need to address this pragmatically, be very careful not to knee jerk in our reaction because statistically, thankfully, at this stage, the attacks of terrorist utilising vehicles and causing harm to the general public are still much lower than those created by cars on an everyday sense. that's not to say this wasn't a horrific attack and there shouldn't be measures put in place but it has to be thought through very carefully. will, live from finsbury park, thank you. let's get some more reaction. joining us now live from our london newsroom is the assistant secretary general
8:44 am
of the muslim council of britain miqdaad versi. thank you so much for your time and i appreciate you holding on listening to our correspondent and security expert there. can i ask you firstly for your reaction? we are all shocked at what's happened, this has affected muslim communities near the mosque and muslin well for house and across the country and britain asa and across the country and britain as a whole, this is something that is shocking and something of this scale can happen and the fact it mightand scale can happen and the fact it might and could happen at other gatherings across the country. people gathering to break their fast and gather for night prayer that happened in this situation and that will continue every day and people have raised serious concerns for their own safety and the fear this might happen again and that's why we welcome very much for the metropolitan police, and sadiq khan the london mayor has said, extra
8:45 am
policing to reassure people because i think that's what we need. we have heard from several eyewitnesses on the scene and other people from your organisation as well talking about the fact that muslims feel deliberately targeted in this and is genuine fear of error from some people? very much so. i think the reality is that muslims have felt there is a large rise in hate crimes, it has been underreported and not investigated in the same way as bigotry against other communities. i think this is a transformative moment which hopefully will mean action is taken to tackle hate crime and the rise in hate crime against muslims taking place over the last few years and has seemed to reach a really worrying situation yesterday. what can be done to stop something like this? we hear from can be done to stop something like this? we hearfrom the met can be done to stop something like this? we hear from the met police there will be extra resources across london, particularly during the observation of ramadan but what can make a difference? as i said earlier
8:46 am
i think we have to be careful about a kneejerk reaction, it's i think we have to be careful about a knee jerk reaction, it's good there will be extra police to reassure the league that the people. i think there needs to be a range of things look that, starting from the way many of these individuals, far right extremists are spreading hate and that is seen as acceptable within many parts of broader society. baroness warsi talked clearly about how islam phobia or has passed the dinner table test, people seem to be able to talk a good about muslims and get away with it without people calling it out, thatis it without people calling it out, that is unacceptable and needs to stop. we have a situation for half the population according to some opinion polls and islam is a threat to western civilisation, these type of things happened because far right extremists peddle hatred and u nfortu nately extremists peddle hatred and unfortunately within some sections of the far right and within some sections of the media, they create this atmosphere of hostility and is very dangerous and needs to be tackled right now. we heard from our
8:47 am
security correspondent mentioning this morning that incidents like this morning that incidents like this play into the hands of the likes of islamic state? that's very true. whether it's the far—right or people who claim to be muslims and committing acts of terror, who want to divide us, who wa nt to terror, who want to divide us, who want to create hatred, but this wasn't an attack on muslims, it was an attack on our civilisation and our society. we care about tolerance. as british people we care about tolerance and respect for others and we can see this by the way that our prime minister, our home secretary, the mayor of london and the police have agented in a very swift, powerful way. this is a terror attack and it will not be tolerated and we hope that all the precursors to this will be looked at as in the same way as all forms of terrorism. the deputy commissioner from the met police said it was an attack on all londoners and london as well.
8:48 am
we are also trying to tell you about some other things as well. here's carol with a look at this morning's weather. good morning. it's already a hot start to the day across many parts of the uk. in london, the current temperatures are 25 celsius, 2a celsius in coventry and 16 celsius in belfast, but cooler in inverness where we have a weather front and rain. cooler in inverness where we have a weatherfront and rain. the cooler in inverness where we have a weather front and rain. the other thing about today is the pollen levels will be very high across—the—board except for where we have got the weather front and indeed, the uv levels are about as high as they get in the uk today. so bear that in high as they get in the uk today. so bearthat in mind. high as they get in the uk today. so bear that in mind. here is our weather front producing rain across the north—west of the uk heading up into the northern isles. the rain will fizzle as we go through the day, but for the rest of us, we're off toa day, but for the rest of us, we're off to a dry start, a sunny one and a very off to a dry start, a sunny one and a very warm or a off to a dry start, a sunny one and a very warm or a hot within. as we go through the course of the day, we hang on to the sunshine across south—west england. inland it will
8:49 am
be hot, while you will fin there will be sea breezes so it will be cooler. but we are looking at highs today somewhere in the south—east up today somewhere in the south—east up to 33 celsius. that makes us warmer than miami. we have got a lot of cloud and showers coming in across parts of eastern and central england. a higher risk we could see afternoon showers across northern england and southern scotland and northern ireland. these too could prove to be thundery, but we won't all see them. the rain fades across the far north of scotland. fresher conditions in northern ireland. there will be more cloud cover as our weather front sinks south and then we are back into the hot sunshine across wales with highs in cardiff reaching 29 celsius. as we head on through the evening and overnight, many of the thundery showers will fade. there will be a lot of dry weather around. we will see more cloud coming in across eastern parts of england. it's going to be another sultry night as well. temperatures in cardiff not dipping lower than 21 celsius, but fresher conditions across the northern half
8:50 am
of the uk. tomorrow, we start off with this cloud. so somewhere like hull or lincoln today do hit 31 or 30 celsius. tomorrow it is likely to be 20 celsius. there will be a lot of sunshine. the highest temperatures drifting towards south—west england and wales where 30, 31 celsius and possibly 32 celsius is not out with the realms of possibility, but it will be hot across many other areas too. through the latter part of the day, we are likely to see heat showers sparked off again across south wales and south—west england and those could be sharp. then as we head into wednesday, rain in north, but the heat starts to pump up once again from the south. dan and lou. we are live on the bbc news channel as well. this is, of course, in response to what happened in finsbury park overnight. we've learnt this morning the police are saying in the last few moments no one else was in this van when it attacked. this one man alone who has
8:51 am
been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after this attack on worshippers in finsbury parkjust after midnight this morning. one man has died and eight others have been taken to three separate hospitals in london and we're hearing from the metropolitan police that two of the eight are metropolitan police that two of the eightare in metropolitan police that two of the eight are in a very serious condition. police were on the scene immediately and further police arrived ten minutes later. we know that this man is in hospital himself. the man, the 48—year—old who has been arrested and he will be questioned by police as well who are looking at this as a major terrorist ins didn'tand looking at this as a major terrorist ins didn't and the counter—terrorism officers are on the scene at the moment. as you can see the aerial shots from finsbury park where there isa shots from finsbury park where there is a large police operation still on going this morning. also today brexit negotiations begin in brussels. steph is at a wholesale market in manchester to gauge how businesses feel about the whole
8:52 am
process. good morning again. good morning everybody. lots of people that i've talked to, talking about the uncertainty. this is a business which is very much, you know, trades on how consumer spending is going. so there, is a whale sale market and lots of people coming to buy stuff for local restau ra nts a nd coming to buy stuff for local restaurants and for shops as well. what they are bothered about are people going to be spending in the shops still and what does it mean for the prices? because we have seen with the currency market and the pound falling that put pressure on the prices. what is the next two yea rs the prices. what is the next two years going to look like. we have got the chief economist here from kpmg. explain the process, what the elements of it now? so there will be three stages that will be in theed. the first one is the exit negotiation, ie the divorce. then
8:53 am
its relationship in the future, the long—term relationship between the uk and the eu and quite possibly also a transitional arrangement to ta ke also a transitional arrangement to take us from one state to the other. if you're looking at the divorce element of this, what does that look like? so there will be quite a few things that need to be negotiated. there will be citizens rights issues, the rights of eu nationals in the uk and uk nationals in the eu. so there will be the financial settlements. at a minimum it is likely to cost the uk £48 billion which is 2.5% of gdp, there will be legal issues like property rights and there will be border issues in particular, the border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland and there will be policing and security issues that will need to be co—ordinated. and security issues that will need to be co-ordinated. it is so complex, isn't it, i was talking it a lady who advises people on negotiation and she said what is so hard, there is so many elements to it, it might not be the big things
8:54 am
that are the problem, it is the little things as well? when you look at the future there will be the negotiation of the future relationship in entry to the single market in terms of goods, services, and people and that would probably need to be negotiated sector by sector and even product by product and then you have the issue as future contributions to the eu as well as regulation that the eu would like the uk to continue and again, that would be regulation by regulation fksly because we're unlikely to get an off—the—shelf agreen belt. and in the meantime businesses like these ones have just got to carry on and, in terms of the economy at the moment, is it a worry all of this? so that represents quite a lot of uncertainty for businesses and for households, we have already seen the uk economy slowing quite significantly in the first quarter of this year so the worry is that this increase in
8:55 am
uncertainty would put more downward pressure on growth in the short to medium—term. pressure on growth in the short to medium-term. i'm going to get out of the way because i'm in the way. it's certainly very busy, but that's it from me. studio: thank you very much. thank you, steph. let's return to our main story. and an attack in the finsbury park area. one man has been killed and eight are seriously injured. the police say it has all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. the prime minister says she will chair an emergency cobra meeting this morning. all of the victims were from the muslim community. khalid was at the scene and described the moment the van struck the pedestrians. the van turned left with no indication, with no — it went left.
8:56 am
one of the people he was under the van. people were gathered around the van. people were gathered around the van to actually lift the van to get this guy from under the van. so the quy this guy from under the van. so the guyjumped this guy from under the van. so the guy jumped out of this guy from under the van. so the guyjumped out of the van, one of them and two literally ran because there were not a lot of people coming out still, but as soon this happened they started shouting and people are gathered around. the two, they ran. one of them got arrested. the people surrounded him and apprehended and he was shouting, "we're all muslims. i want to kill all mus littles. " word by word, he said it like this. i'm sure guys, this is terrorist attack. whether he isa this is terrorist attack. whether he is a muslim, whether he is a christian. this is a terrorist attack. tomorrow, i don't want to see them saying oh he has got mental issues. this is not acceptable. otherwise all the terrorists have done, they have got mental issues of the it is categorised as a terrorist
8:57 am
whether. all of they will are terrorists. the police are saying it is being treated as a terrorist incident and all indication are it seems to have been a deliberate attack, what's your response? i think what people in the community were concerned about at the beginning, when these reports come in, the police need to be sure that they have evidence to guide them and obviously as events have unfolded in the last six or seven hours it's very clear that this was a deliberate attack targeting muslims who were leaving prayers. some people were telling me that the main mosque, finsbury park mosque hadn't finished their prayers and when he saw another mosque five meubs away, he decided to head in that direction. which is the muslim
8:58 am
welfare centre in seven sisters road. they have been saying their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and those injured. we have been hearing reaction from the muslim community. we heard from the muslim community. we heard from the muslim council of brib saying that peel in the muslim community would have seen this coming. do you think there has been a fear of something like this because of heightened tensions in recent weeks that something like this has been in the pipe line? there was a ramp in islamophobia and we have got to change the language of division and replace it with language of hope. terrorism is evil and human life is sacred the the government should be commended. the prime minister is chairing a cobra meeting as we speak and will be addressing the nation shortly. what we are going to do now, is say goodbye to viewers on the bbc news channel. thank you for
8:59 am
watching us. joanna gosling will have continuing coverage on bbc two ina have continuing coverage on bbc two in a moment. hello, it's monday, it's 9 o'clock, i'm joanna gosling, welcome to the programme — where we are reporting from finsbury park in north london, where in the very early hours of this morning a van mounted the pavement and drove into a crowd. the van travelling at speed struck a crowd which had gathered to help an elderly man who had collapsed on seven sisters road. at least 10 people were injured and that man died. he was shouting: "we're all muslims. i want to kill all muslims. literally he said that. word by word."> the incident happened at 20 past midnight, by the muslim welfare house on seven sisters road, which is round the corner from the well known finsbury park mosque, and which also houses another mosque.
